Presentation themes: fulldome; educational advances in planetariums
Explorer Dome’s latest fulldome project transforms the planetarium into a brain, immerses its audience in neuroscience, explores brain health, promotes audience interaction and aims to destigmatise dementia. Thanks to funding from Alzheimer's Research UK, in collaboration with Bristol University and expanding our own in-house team of digital content creators, we will share our experience creating innovative fulldome shows in a mobile planetarium, promoting non-astronomy content and attracting new audiences.
We will discuss low-budget digital content creation within a small team. We will share our learning about live presenting within a modular full-dome show including interactive demonstrations and the balance between audience focus on the presenter versus focus on visual content. Finally, we will highlight how new content opens up new, under-served audiences, especially in the context of the mobile dome and the opportunities this allows.
Explorer Dome is one of the UK’s leading science outreach organisations running 5 mobile domes based in Bristol and London since 1998. We reach over 70,000 people each year in schools, youth groups and public events, have a team of 15 professional science communicators and an in-house team of digital content developers. We use our domes as portable science theatre venues presenting live, presenter-led, interactive shows on a wide range of science topics from Astronomy, Light, Sound & Energy to Cells, Environment, Chemistry and Sustainability.
