Post-Conference Tour

26 - 27 July 2024

What would an IPS Conference be without an interesting post-conference tour that takes us deeper into our field? We have planned an exciting post-conference tour for participants.

26 July 2024

The post-conference tour begins in Berlin the day after the conference ends. First stop is in the city of Halle, Germany, to visit the Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte (State Museum of Pre-History). The museum is one of the most important archaeological museums in Central Europe. Its exhibitions offer a unique esperience and present the latest research findings in impressive pictures and stories. Each individual artifact occupies a special place in the cultural history of mankind and makes a visit to the museum a vivid journey into our past. Our tour however, focuses on one of the jewels of the museum, the Himmelsscheibe Nebra (the Nebra Sky Disc). The Nebra Sky Disk is the oldest documentation of the night sky in the world and it was discovered right here in Germany!

The evening will end with a delicious meal together and an overnight stay in the beautiful city of Leipzig.

27 July 2024

After breakfast, we head to the Arche Nebra Visitor Center. Come with us on an exciting journey back in time to 3,600 years ago. What makes the site where the Sky Disk was found such a special place? Is astronomical knowledge really encoded on the disk? And why is the mysterious bronze disk an »archaeological find of the century«? These and other questions will be answered here. Afterwards, the adventure continues at the Ringheiligtum Pömmelte (Pömmelte-Ring Sanctuary). To the south of Magdeburg, archaeologists discovered the remains of a cult site more than 4,000 years old. Not far from Elbe, the circular ditch was reconstructed at the original site. In terms of size, structure and function, the Pömmelte ring sanctuary resembled Stonehenge in England. However, the construction in Pömmelte did not consist of large stones, but of thousands of wooden poles.

After the visit to Ringheiligtum Pömmelte, the tour will make its way back to Berlin, the end destination.
